Our goal is to assist the parents in their responsibility to develop in their child, a sense of belonging to a Faith Community which is identified by its beliefs in Jesus Christ as well as the writings and teachings of the Catholic Church. We offer classes for Kindergarten through high school. The Director of Religious Formation is the overseer of the faith formation program. The program is staffed by capable and conscientious volunteers. The Diocese of Dodge City provides continuing education and certification of catechists through professional college classes, Diocesan workshops, and parish workshops. Anyone teaching in our program must be open to a criminal background check and participating in the Protecting God’s Children workshop on child abuse. Our sacramental preparation programs require students to be enrolled in the Wednesday evening Religious Formation classes or in St. Dominic School. Baptism is a pre-requisite for the other sacraments. Those who were not baptized at St. Dominic or St. Mary will need to present a copy of their baptismal certificate to the Director of Religious Formation. First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are celebrated in second grade or above and the students must be attending their second year of formation classes at St. Dominic or bring records of attendance from another parish. First Reconciliation is celebrated during Advent, following three preparatory meetings. First Eucharist is celebrated in April or May of the same school year, following three or four preparatory meetings. Confirmation is usually received during the Easter season in the eleventh grade preceded by two years of preparation in ninth and tenth grades. Sponsors must be actively involved Catholics who are at least 16 years of age and have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. If you have any questions, please call Sister Myra at 276-3500. |
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
RCIA is the new - though truly old - process introduced by the church in the 1960s, to prepare adults for Catholic baptism. Actually based on the tradition of the very early church, RCIA is now embraced in dioceses all over the world. No longer do individuals seek out private "tutoring" with a priest in order to become "converts." Today, this gradual embrace of Catholic doctrine -- and receiving of the Holy Spirit -- involves the learner, the priest and the entire parish community. Learners progress through a time of "inquiry," (early questioning), to the "catechumenate," (intense study) and through "purification and enlightenment," (preparation for the Easter sacraments). At Easter Vigil, in a powerful, spirit-filled liturgy, they are baptized and become "neophytes." And, like the rest of us, they continue with conversion that will last the rest of their lives. Father Wesley Schawe leads the RCIA team at St. Dominic. Mary Calzonetti and Trish Keller assist him as coordinators, and Sr. Myra Arney instructs youngsters seeking baptism. Other team volunteers serve as discussion leaders, hosts and sponsors. Anyone who feels called to volunteer, or to learn more about the church as an "inquirer," is invited to call the parish office. Sessions are hosted throughout the year: weekly from September to Easter, and monthly from Easter to the end of August. Meeting times, dates and locations vary. They are announced on this website and in the weekly bulletin. |
